Magnifying glass and the ancient magic book on wooden table

“The Festival” by HP Lovecraft

The Festival by HP Lovecraft is the first of our Storyteller Special episodes.

In these episodes, released at the end of every three seasons, we read a short story in the same fashion that we produce our episodes. There will be music, character voices, and surround sounds mixed in for those who prefer to wear headphones when listening to our podcast.

We chose Lovecraft’s The Festival for a couple of reasons. First, the end of our last season, The Vampire, coincides with Yuletide (21December-01January). This short story takes place during Yuletide. The Festival also has some imagery that coincides with some of the narratives from The Vampire series.

With these things in mind, we were happy to do a reading of this story.

The narrator is called back to the town of Kinsgport to partake in a family tradition described as “ancient.” When he arrives in Kinsgport, he finds a town that is replete with 17th century houses apparently with no electricity.

He finds the house where he was told family would await him. When he arrives, he is greeted at the door and makes himself at home on a sofa by the fireplace. There is a pile of century old books nearby, including the Necronomicon from which he reads.

Then he is motioned to leave the house to partake in the ritual.

What lies ahead is perfectly Lovecraftian.

Mystery. Unease. Dread. Cosmic Horror. Madness.
